This Aviation Safety Education Program (ASEP) short-course in Safety Management Systems (approx. 1 hour) explains SMS and condenses system-safety concepts and principles into “hands-on” information that is easily understood and applied. Taken in part from Transport Canada’s SMS Vision presentation and used with permission, this short-course begins by explaining in plain language the background, benefits and concepts of SMS. These concepts are then applied in an overview of the OAG Safety Management Program. It is open to the aviation community and is provided free of charge, in the interest of aviation safety education. Total time to complete the 7 modules herein is less than one hour. Upon completion of the SMS short course, a certificate of completion may be printed for your records. NOTE:
This SMS Short-Course is a prerequisite for all other SMS program curricula, for all categories of personnel. If you are taking any of the SMS curricula below, you must first complete the Short-Course and print a copy of your SMS Short-Course Certificate of Completion. Submit a copy of the Certificate of Completion to your company’s Safety Officer as evidence you have taken the Short-Course, and for inclusionin your Safety Management Training records.

Safety Officer & Auditor SMS Training
Only the company Safety Officer (or Director of Safety, Safety Manager) and Internal Evaluation Program (IEP) auditors are required to complete the modules within this category of training. The modules herein address the duties and responsibilities of the Safety Officer and include instructions and procedures for the performance of Internal Evaluation Program audits. Other subject elements covered include the establishment, maintenance and security of Risk Management Files, use of voluntary disclosures and and ASRS (NASA) reporting policies and procedures. For those senior managers who desire a nuts-and-bolts, in-depth understanding of their safety manager’s IEP duties and recordkeeping procedures, this course is recommended. All senior managers are urged to take this course.
Total time to complete the 3 modules herein is approximately 1.5 hours. At the end of each module, a test must be completed in order to move on to the next module. Upon completion of this curriculum, click “SUBMIT” and the test will be electronically submitted to your company’s Safety Officer. A certificate of completion may also be printed for your records.
SMS Vendor Employee TrainingThis category of training is for your company’s vendor employees who provide contract fueling, contract deicing and contract maintenance services. These training modules promote your company’s safety culture and educate vendor personnel in the use of your Safety Management Program’s Confidential Reporting System in order to report hazards and/or irregularities. You need their involvement to learn about hazards that may exist within your operation; encourage them to come aboard. There is no cost for this training.
Total time to complete the 2 modules herein is only 30 minutes. At the end of each module, a test must be completed in order to move on to the next module. Upon completion of this curriculum, click “SUBMIT” and the test will be electronically submitted to the Safety Officer of the company who’s username and password was used to gain access. A certificate of completion may also be printed for your records.
