SMS Short-Course

This Aviation Safety Education Program (ASEP) short-course in Safety Management Systems (approx. 1 hour) explains SMS and condenses system-safety concepts and principles into “hands-on” information that is easily understood and applied. Taken in part from Transport Canada’s SMS Vision presentation and used with permission, this short-course begins by explaining in plain language the background, benefits and concepts of SMS. These concepts are then applied in an overview of the OAG Safety Management Program. It is open to the aviation community and is provided free of charge, in the interest of aviation safety education. Total time to complete the 7 modules herein is less than one hour.

NOTE: The SMS Short-Course is a prerequisite for all other SMS training curricula, for all categories of personnel. If you are taking any of the SMS curricula below, you must first complete the Short-Course. When you commence your SMS training, you will be asked to certify your completion of the SMS Short-Course.

SMS Training for Personnel
All Company personnel must complete the training modules within this category. This includes line personnel, all managers, department heads, the company safety manager and senior company management. This training is essential in order to promote your company’s positive and “just” safety culture. Emphasis is placed on senior management’s commitment to the SMS, and to the protection, safety and well-being of all employees and customers. Training modules herein educate all personnel in how to access, use and improve your company’s Safety Management System. This training encourages and promotes a supportive “team attitude” in applying sound judgment and making good decisions, every day. Special emphasis is also placed on your Company’s Confidential Reporting System, through which you can report hazards, errors and safety concerns (anonymously if desired), without fear of retribution. Total time to complete the 9 modules herein is approximately 3.0 hours.

SMS Training for Managers

All managers and department heads, including the company Safety Officer and senior management, must complete the training modules within this category. This training is in addition to PERSONNEL TRAINING, and includes managers’ duties and responsibilities regarding receipt of hazard and irregularity reports, confidentiality policies and safety-committee-member duties & responsibilities. Other subject elements include hazard assessment, root cause analysis, application of risk management, development of Risk Controls and Corrective Action Plans (CAPs), Hazard and RC/CAP communication, and safety assurance processes. Total time to complete the 9 modules herein is approximately 3.0 hours.

SMS Training for Safety Officers & Auditors

Only the company Safety Officer (or Director of Safety, Safety Manager) and designated auditors are required to complete this curriculum. Modules herein address the duties and responsibilities of the Safety Officer and include instructions and procedures for the performance of Internal Evaluation Program audits. Other subject elements covered include the establishment, maintenance and security of Risk Management Records, use of voluntary disclosures and and ASRS (NASA) reporting policies and procedures. For managers who desire a nuts-and-bolts, in-depth understanding of their safety officer's IEP duties and recordkeeping procedures, this course is recommended. All senior managers are urged to take this course. Total time to complete the 4 modules herein is approximately 1 hour.
